How DC motors and universal motors work

Great video, but it raised a couple questions for me. I know a lot of cordless drills use PWM (pulse width modulation) to control the amount of voltage to the motor, but PWM is a varying DC signal, not an AC signal. Is it really an AC signal? If so, do you have an Oscilloscope? I would be quite interested in seeing the signal being fed into the motor and the stator assembly. It just seems like unnecessary complexity to introduce
